Format:

The Burnout Prevention Hack-A-Thon is designed to be equal parts fun, educational, and motivating as groups come together to practice self-care as a community. Workshop For Real Life Founder, Anna Lindberg Cedar, MPA, LCSW, LICSW, presents a set of "universal precautions" against burnout in this workshop and engages participants to practice the skills in real time. Participants will learn how to interrupt stress as they apply the Four Solution Analysis, a research-backed tool adapted from Dialectical Behavior Therapy to improve self-care practices on and off the job. The Burnout Prevention Hack-A-Thon teaches a range of problem-solving, cognitive coping, and acceptance-based strategies to help groups practice alleviating stress together.

The Hack-A-Thon component of the workshop invites group participants to share their own examples of each research-backed burnout prevention skill with suggestions from their own practice (eg. “I love to exercise!” … “My grandma always used to say……” …. “Our workplace offers… x, y, or z benefit…”). Research shows that individuals are more likely to take action on their goals when they help generate their own solutions. It is in these conversations that leaders and teams become inspired to generate their own ideas for workplace wellness and workplace supports beyond the hackathon.

Past participants have said that they have appreciated getting a solid foundation of training in evidence-based coping skills, while also appreciating the time to get in touch with the self-care strategies that already work for them. Workshop participants participate in 4+ hands-on stress management exercises, multiple team conversations, and leave with a personalized Self-Care Strategic Plan, including handouts and access to the Workshops For Real Life digital self-care library.

The 4 Solution Analysis

(Concepts drawn and adapted from Dialectical Behavior Therapy)

There are four solutions to any problem.

Solution #1:  Change the situation or solve the problem.

  • Solve the problem by mobilizing available resources, ideas, and willingness to change.

  • Leave a stressful situation either temporarily or permanently (eg. change projects / teams).

Group practice: Practice relaxation skills to buffer against job stress.

Solution #2:  Change your feelings about the situation.

  • Turn the negative into a positive.

  • “See the bright side.”

  • “Turn lemons into lemonade.”

Group practice: Small group discussion re: “The best mistake you’ve ever made”.

Solution #3:  Radically accept the situation as it is.

  • Don’t change a thing.

  • Accept the reality of the situation as it is right now.

Group practice: Guided mindfulness practice in coping with difficult experiences.

Solution #4:  Stay miserable.

  • That's it. Just stay miserable.

  • Because that's an option too.

Group practice: Small group discussion re: “How to know when you’re miserable?” / Signs of stress.

Closing Exercise: Personalize your Self-Care Strategic Plan

Take Home: Access to the Workshops For Real Life Self-Care Library to support continued practice.
